From Jacoby Brissett’s perspective, everyone in the Patriots quarterback room is eager to become a starter.

He believes this type of competition is healthy and could bear fruit in the long term.

“Honestly, everyone wants to be the guy,” Brissett told reporters. “Everyone is competing to be the guy. This is what you want. If neither of us wanted to play, our room would be a mess.

He said the organization would be “in the wrong hands” if that were not the case.

At the same time, the veteran Brissett said he hopes to serve as a mentor to the team’s younger players — much like the older Patriots did for him during his first stint.

Brissett pointed out Drake Maye’s talent and said he can make every throw.

He said he was excited to work with him, adding that Maye had already used him as a resource. They even played golf earlier this offseason with quarterback Sam Howell, who happens to be a former teammate of each player.

“I remember when I followed Tom (Brady) everywhere,” Brissett said. “He’s already texting me about games and how I think about things and cadence, all the little nuances of being in this position at this level.”

Brissett referred to himself as “a kid in a candy store” upon his arrival in New England. Although he’s much older and has played on several teams now, the buzz hasn’t died down in Foxborough.

“You still get the same feeling I felt when I was 23 walking into the building,” Brissett said.
