Executive council members of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) are expected to receive a dearness allowance of $300 per day (Rs 25,023) for five days during the Paris 2024 Olympics. This amount is an increase from the previous 150 dollars per day (Rs 12,511) that executive board members received during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

However, Indian athletes will continue to receive $50 (Rs 4,170), which has not changed since the Tokyo Olympics, according to a report in The gallery. The report added that the executive council members will also receive $1,000 (Rs 83,410) for the five days.

An executive council meeting was held on December 26, days after PT Usha took over as IOA president. The decision to revise the dearness allowance was taken in this meeting. In a bid to balance expenses, the IOA has decided to pay athletes a participation allowance of Rs 2 lakh, while coaches and support staff will get Rs 1 lakh each. The IOA will not, however, have to bear the entire expense, with the Ministry of Sports having to cover part of these costs.

The new budget estimate, however, sparked some controversy within the divided executive council. PT Usha, in her letter to the executive members, asked them to give their consent on the budget estimate.

“…I request your agreement on these budget estimates in order to facilitate the timely implementation and successful execution of our plans. You will notice that this also includes funds approved by the Indian government to support our teams. Your prompt review and approval will be highly appreciated as it will enable us to proceed without any delay,” PT Usha wrote.

Sahadev Yadav, IOA treasurer, suggested holding an executive council meeting to discuss the issue of budget estimates.

“…As the matter relates to the financial approval of the Paris Olympic Games, I have my humble suggestion to convene a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Indian Olympic Association to finalize the budgetary estimates for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games,” Sahadev wrote.

The Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11.
