Australian international rules football star Jackson Irvine has finally married his long-term partner Jemilla Pir after having to postpone the ceremony because he was drunk for two days.

The former Burton Albion and Hull City midfielder, 31, led German side St Pauli back into the domestic top flight following their 3-1 win over VFL Osnabruck on Sunday.

He was due to marry his fiancée Jemilla in Denmark on Tuesday, but the footballer, in the worst shape, forgot to take his passport for the wedding, prompting Danish authorities to refuse to organize the ceremony.

Jemilla, a tattoo artist, took to Instagram to share what had happened, with the couple forced to postpone work until they got their act together.

“When you’ve been drunk for 2 days and forget to bring your passport to your wedding appointment,” she posted alongside three clown emojis.

“Let’s try again tomorrow,” she added. ‘(Tonight’s party is still in progress).’

Luckily, everything went according to plan the second time around, with Pir posting several photos on Instagram of the two showing off their passports on the way to the venue.

The occasion was non-traditional, with Pir sharing photos of the happy couple dressed relatively casually with sunglasses as they cut the cake.

Another photo showed the newlyweds standing in the street, holding flares as people cheered around them.

Irvine has had a successful career in European football, having signed for Celtic from Melbourne Victory in 2010.

As well as captaining his club in Germany, Irvine has also worn the Socceroos armband.
