Inside Harry and Meghan’s ‘low-key’ £3,000-a-night presidential suite where the couple stayed during their ‘non-royal tour’ of Nigeria

This is the luxury presidential suite where Harry and Meghan stayed during their trip to Nigeria – as officials revealed they had already invited them later this year.

Meghan and Harry’s quasi-royal tour took on a presidential feel as they passed through Abuja and Lagos in a 14-car convoy with hooded machine guns carrying soldiers.

Initially, the couple was scheduled to stay at the Transcorp Hilton, but for security and logistical reasons – a large gathering of African leaders was taking place at the same time – they moved to the Fraser Suites.

The Duke and Duchess, their security, various Invictus Games directors and assistants occupied the entire top floor of the Fraser Suites in central Abuja, which was their base for the trip which began on Friday.

On its website, Fraser Suites – which has partner hotels in Paris and London – describes itself as the “undisputed choice for business and leisure travelers with its impeccable facilities and services and highly secure location”.

Meghan and Harry had a four-bedroom executive penthouse, worth £3,000 a night, on the top floor, complete with its own living and dining room and spectacular views of the Nigerian capital.

The couple used the hotel as a base for their many wardrobe changes throughout the trip which began on Friday and ended on Sunday evening with a charity polo match and fundraiser in Lagos.

They left Abuja early Monday morning after returning from Lagos and received a military escort.

The Fraser Suites also has a state-of-the-art gym, swimming pool, two restaurants and private gardens, but Harry and Meghan ate in their suite and were not seen in the hotel’s public areas .

One staff member said: “We were all told not to talk about their time here, but now that they are gone we can share.

“They arrived here very early Friday morning and left very early Monday morning for the British Airways flight back to London.

“They were supposed to stay somewhere else but because of security and other events they came here and to be honest it’s a much quieter and more discreet hotel.

“I only saw them briefly, but they seemed very happy to be here in Nigeria and everyone loves Meghan because of her Nigerian heritage.”

The Duchess sparked wild scenes from locals who were delighted after she revealed a DNA test showed she was 43% Nigerian and described the West African nation as ” my country” during a speech she gave.

Sussex Squad groupies – fans of the Duke and Duchess – followed the couple throughout the trip, waving flags with photos of the couple and declaring Meghan their “sister”.

After discovering her ancestry, Meghan said she called her mother “because she wanted to know if she was aware of it.”

She added that the discovery was “exciting” for both of them and that it was “really eye-opening and humbling to be able to learn about my heritage and to be able to know that this is just the beginning of the discovery.”

The couple had been invited to visit by the Chief of Defense Staff, Charles Musa, and Harry was keen to present the troubled West African country’s part in his Invictus Games project for injured military personnel.

During her visit to the military top brass, she thanked them for “welcoming me into their home” – and proudly wore traditional Nigerian clothing on the last day of the trip the dignitaries had gifted her on Saturday.

This came as Nigeria’s Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis exclusively told MailOnline that he had invited the couple in November, when Nigeria is due to host the African Military Games.

Meghan Markle was showered with love by Nigerian fans who welcomed their “new princess” during the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit to the country.

He said: “Harry and Meghan’s visit was a fantastic success and they had a huge time as our guests. They loved the welcome they received, especially Meghan because she is 43% Nigerian.

“The objective of the visit, to show how Nigeria helps its wounded soldiers, was achieved but it was also an opportunity for them to see a country they had never visited.

“The warm welcome they received was evident and you could see they were still having fun as they smiled and waved. I invited them back for the African Military Games later this year.

“They are hoping to come and they are more than welcome here anytime, especially since Meghan is Nigerian.”

Then speaking about Harry’s visit to a military hospital in Kaduna – where he went alone as the area is considered dangerous, AVM Marquis commended Harry for his compassion towards the injured soldiers.

Paying an almost Mother Theresa-style compliment, he said: “For the wounded and injured soldiers, seeing him and meeting him lifted their morale.

“They were encouraged by his words and seeing and meeting the Duke lifted their morale and gave them the courage to face what they are going through.”

“Everyone was happy to see him and Meghan, from the soldiers to the children, and they brought happiness to the people they met, which is why they are welcome anytime.”
