Photos Show How the Titanic Passengers Were Rescued

  • The RMS Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, almost 112 years ago, after hitting an iceberg.
  • The RMS Carpathia, which was three hours away, came to the rescue of the stranded survivors.
  • Of the approximately 2,200 people aboard the Titanic, only about 700 people managed to gain access to the lifeboats.

The sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912 has aroused worldwide fascination for 112 years.

The stories of those who were plucked from the icy waters – or those who narrowly missed being aboard the ship – dominated headlines in the months following the sinking. In the decades since, the discovery of the wreck, ill-fated attempts to visit it and the 1997 film “Titanic” — the first billion-dollar movie in history — have all proven the lasting legacy of the tragedy.

Around 2,200 people were aboard the RMS Titanic when it crossed the Atlantic Ocean towards New York. Of those people, only about 700 survivors managed to board lifeboats after the ship collided with an iceberg off the coast of Greenland.

The RMS Carpathia, which was three hours away at the time of the sinking, came to the rescue of the stranded survivors.

These photos show how the Titanic’s passengers were rescued from the icy waters.
