How Newcastle win over Tottenham triggered Chelsea transfer clause

Newcastle’s crushing victory over Tottenham all but confirmed the permanent signing of Lewis Hall from Chelsea.

Newcastle can no longer finish below 14th in the Premier League after their 4-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday afternoon.

As a result, Hall’s loan spell at Chelsea will become permanent this summer for a fee of £28 million.

The 19-year-old signed for the Magpies on loan from Chelsea last summer with an obligation to buy if they finished above 15th place.

It is now mathematically impossible for Eddie Howe’s team to finish lower, that being the only criterion needed, not looks.

Hall came on late against Spurs, making his 16th appearance of the season.

The teenager has been largely left out this season by Howe, leading to suspicions he could be sent back to Chelsea at the end of the campaign.

But this is no longer viable and he will become a permanent member of the Toon at the start of the transfer window this summer.

And it comes at a good time for Chelsea, who may need to find ways to raise funds to comply with PSR rules.

They have already broken unwanted Premier League records for spending and players could be forced to leave.

Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella could be sold to replenish the club’s coffers.

Conor Gallagher has been heavily linked with a move away and could cost around £50million with Tottenham interested.

And Ange Postecoglou would perhaps look at the transfer window with more interest after seeing his team feel uncomfortable on Saturday.

Alexander Isak scored twice while Anthony Gordon made Premier League history in a 4-0 win which also saw Fabian Schar score from a corner.

It was a miserable day for Spurs, who dropped out of the top four following their heavy defeat, ceding their place to Aston Villa.
