How much does Starbucks cost in YOUR state? Fascinating map shows how the cost of a latte varies across the United States

  • A Starbucks coffee is the most expensive in Vermont, costing an average of $5.73 per cup
  • But in neighboring Maine, coffee is the cheapest, at $4.44 a cup on average.

Coffee drinkers in Maine pay an average of $1.30 less for a Starbucks coffee than those in neighboring Vermont, a new analysis reveals.

Pine Street State is home to the cheapest Starbucks in the United States, with residents paying an average of $4.44 per cup of coffee.

It was followed by Maryland and Virginia, where prices are $4.47 and $4.63, respectively, according to PriceListo data.

For comparison, Starbucks fans in Vermont have to pay $5.73 per cup of coffee, more than in any other state.

A handful of states in the central United States had some of the most expensive coffee. Among them were Wyoming, South Dakota, Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Not surprisingly, Starbucks coffees were expensive in New York and Washington, D.C., around $5.20 per cup. In California, coffee shops are also on the more expensive end of the spectrum, at $5.07 per cup on average.

In Maine, the average price of a Starbucks coffee was the cheapest, at $4.44 per cup, according to new data from PriceListo.

“One reason prices may differ could be because states apply higher sales taxes or additional levies on certain products, which may affect the final price consumers pay for their coffee,” said a Pricelisto spokesperson.

“Another important factor in price variation is the difference in cost of living between states. States with a higher cost of living, such as California or New York, tend to have higher prices for goods and services, including coffee,” they added.

In the fourth quarter of last year, Starbucks sales increased 8 percent in North America and net revenues increased 11 percent to a record $9.4 billion.

Since 2020, the coffee giant’s annual revenues have been on a steady upward trajectory. Over the past four fiscal years, that amount has increased by more than 50 percent, from $23.5 billion.

Experts say the company’s dynamic seasonal menu, rewards program, new initiatives and, increasingly, social media presence are behind its strong performance.

Last week, a new minimum wage for fast food workers was introduced in California. In response, Starbucks and other similar restaurant chains began raising the price of menu items to compensate for increased labor costs.

Menu items went from $0.50 to $1.00, Business Insider reported.

A Starbucks spokesperson confirmed prices had increased in response to the new pay, but declined to specify the average increase for menu items.
