Heung-min Son can leapfrog Arsenal legend and move closer to Harry Kane for north London derby goals

Heung-min Son could further etch his name into Tottenham folklore by scoring the goals that derail Arsenal’s title bid.

The Spurs captain prepares for Sunday’s north London derby, with both teams eyeing both a win and bragging rights as the season draws to a close.

This weekend’s clash promises to be crucial, with Spurs needing maximum points in their quest for a top four finish, while nothing short of a win would end Liverpool’s title hopes. Arsenal.

Son will be licking his lips ahead of Sunday’s 195th meeting between the two clubs, with added incentive.

No stranger to a highlight reel in the derby, Son has seven goals to his name in 19 appearances against the Gunners, making him the fourth highest scorer in the history of the north London derby.

Scorer of two superb goals in the first leg at the Emirates in September, the South Korean’s heroics go well beyond the goals, having also registered five assists during his duels with Arsenal.

The 2015 signing from Bayer Leverkusen is just two goals away from matching Robert Pires’ nine-goal derby haul and what better time to overtake the Gunners legend while putting a huge damper on Arsenal’s title aspirations.

“I know what it means for the club, the fans and the players too,” Son said before the match last September. “As players, we need to understand what kind of game it is.”

A hat-trick would see Son leapfrog the Frenchman while closing in on former Arsenal and Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The former Togo international scored ten times in that match – eight for Arsenal and two for Tottenham.

Adebayor’s goal return, while admirable, is far inferior to that of Son’s former Spurs teammate Harry Kane.

The current Bayern Munich striker was a thorn in the side of the Gunners after scoring 14 goals in the north London derbies.

But Kane’s exit has given Son the opportunity to continue his legacy in the game and the chance to follow the England skipper further contributes to the Gunners’ misery following their Champions League exit at the hands of Kane and co.

The 31-year-old is up to 15 league goals for the season and just five points behind joint top scorers Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer in the race for the Golden Boot.

And in the eyes of Spurs fans, there would be no better place to begin a late-season push to reclaim the prize he won in the 2021/22 campaign, than Sunday’s showdown at the North from London.
