Harry Kane scores 40th goal of the season as Bayern Munich beat Union Berlin 5-1 – and moves closer to his own personal best

Harry Kane scored a 30-yard free kick to break the 40-goal mark for the second time in his career.

The Bayern Munich striker scored his effort in a 5-1 win over Union Berlin.

Leon Goretzka, Mathys Tel and Thomas Muller with two goals all contributed to the rout, with Yorbe Vertessen securing a late consolation for the hosts.

This takes Kane to 33 goals in 30 Bundsliga matches and 40 goals in 41 matches in all competitions, closing in on a personal best.

Kane scored 41 goals for Tottenham in the 2017/18 season as they finished third in the Premier League, but he is on course to surpass that figure.

After a 40-metre free kick, he only needs two goals to beat his record of 41 in a season.

If Bayern Munich manage to beat Real Madrid to reach the Champions League final, it means they will have seven more matches left at this stage to complete their tally.

He needs nine more goals if he is to beat Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga record of 41 goals in a single season, which he failed to beat in 2020/21.

Bayern’s next match is against Eintracht Frankfurt before hosting Real Madrid on April 30 for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Kane reveled in his “incredible” 1-0 win over Arsenal on Wednesday, enjoying beating his old rivals from his Tottenham days.

Bayern’s qualification for the Champions League is all but sealed. They are 10 points ahead of fifth-placed Borussia after playing a game more, but Dortmund have just five games left and the Bundesliga is on course for five Champions League places anyway next season.
