England rugby star Billy Vunipola has apologized after being arrested and fined over an incident in a bar in Majorca.

The 31-year-old was struck twice by police following calls from security staff to attend a disturbance at the Epic restaurant in Palma at 4.30am on Sunday.

According to Spanish police, Vunipola took off his shirt and threatened customers and employees with bottles and chairs before attempting to attack officers called to the bar.

Footage has emerged of the moment a topless Vunipola was confronted by police, apparently laughing as he was about to be tasered.

The first Taser had no effect on the 6ft 2in, 20 stone Saracens player, and he was only knocked to the ground when police shot him a second time.

Vunipola was then taken by police officers to a nearby station, where he was photographed handcuffed.

In a statement released by his club Saracens, Vunipola said he had been charged with resisting the law and fined 240 euros (£205) following a “speed trial”.

He described the incident as an “unfortunate misunderstanding” that had “spiraled out of control”.

Vunipola said: “I can confirm that I was involved in an unfortunate misunderstanding when leaving a club in Mallorca on Sunday, which got out of hand.

“Contrary to what the media reports, there was no violence, no fights and I did not threaten anyone at any time, with bottles, chairs or anything else.

“I was accused of rebellion and, following an ‘express trial’, I paid a fine of 240 euros.

“The Spanish police investigation is now closed and I am returning to the UK today.

“I will obviously cooperate with Saracens’ internal process and apologize unreservedly for any inconvenience to everyone involved.”

His club said: “Saracens are aware of an incident involving Billy Vunipola in Mallorca.

“We will of course address this incident internally and will not make any further comment until then.”

A spokesperson for the Mallorca National Police said: “Yesterday morning, at 4:30 a.m., we arrested a 31-year-old foreigner on suspicion of the offense of disobedience and assault against a police officer. The events occurred in a leisure establishment located by the sea in Palma, when a man provoked altercations inside the establishment.

“The man did not listen to reason and confronted the rest of the customers, and security personnel were unable to restrain him or remove him from the premises. The police were alerted and the officers, seeing the man shirtless and making gestures with his hands, evacuated the scene.

“It was then that he confronted the police and attempted to attack the officers. The police tried at all times to calm him down, but the man would not listen to reason. At that point, the man pushed and slapped a police officer and the officer pulled out his stun gun and fired the first time without the weapon discharging.

“A second projectile was then fired, which did its job, and that’s when the police threw themselves on him and proceeded to immobilize him by chaining him, then took him to the “Son Espases hospital for evaluation and arrest.”

Vunipola was born in Australia before the family moved to Wales when he was a child.

He received a scholarship to the prestigious Harrow School and was enrolled at Wasps Academy there.

He made his England debut in 2013 and has played 75 times for his country. However, he was not selected for the 2024 Six Nations.
