Fire rages in Copenhagen’s 17th-century Old Stock Exchange

Copenhagen, Denmark — One of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings is on fire and its iconic spire has collapsed.

The roof of the 17th-century Stock Exchange, or Boersen, which was once Denmark’s financial center, was gutted by flames on Tuesday.

The building, located next to Christiansborg Palace where parliament sits, is a popular tourist attraction. Its distinctive spire, shaped like the tails of four intertwined dragons, reached a height of 56 meters (184 feet).

Huge clouds of smoke rose above downtown Copenhagen and people rushed inside the building to save the paintings. Danish media reported that a parliament annex was being evacuated.

Police and firefighters were working outside the building, which was surrounded by scaffolding. Ambulances were on scene but no casualties were reported.

Police told social media site X that a main road in Copenhagen was closed and people should expect the area to be cordoned off for some time.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
