Fenerbahce forfeit cup final in protest after one minute of play as they walk off against Galatasaray as bizarre XI fielded

Fenerbahce lost the Turkish Super Cup final in dramatic fashion after fielding the club’s under-19 team against rivals Galatasaray.

The young Yellow Canaries team conceded a goal from Mauro Icardi in the first minute, before leaving the field in protest.

The dramatic protest allowed Galatasaray to receive the trophy, but the nature of the forfeit prevented any type of ceremony.

Fenerbahce kept their promise to leave their stars out of the game, which included former Premier League players Edin Dzeko and Dusan Tadic.

The intercontinental derby which was to decide the Turkish Super Cup has been postponed twice, although it was initially scheduled to take place last August.

The event was then postponed to December in Saudi Arabia, but Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray did not show up, causing another suspension.

This was because Saudi authorities refused to allow the Turkish duo to bring banners commemorating national icon Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The third and final date set for the Super Cup final was Sunday in Sanliurfa, more than 500 miles from Fenerbahce’s base in Istanbul.

It also comes just four days before Fenerbahce travel to Greece for their Europa Conference League quarter-final against Olympiakos.

As a result, Ismail Kartal’s men requested a further postponement but, after obtaining a refusal, they resorted to radical measures in protest.

After Fenerbahce’s departure, Galatasaray’s reserve team took to the field to face the first team in an attempt to compensate the fans present.

Fenerbahce started their entire U19 team for this match, with the club’s striker Cagri Fedai aged just 17 and wearing No.94.

The club also named just four substitutes on the bench, none of them a striker, with Dzeko, Tadic and Michy Batshuayi all missing.

Fenerbahce’s latest post on its X account shows training photos of its first team preparing for Thursday’s Conference League clash, without any reference to Sanliurfa or the Super Cup final.

For its part, Galatasaray, which has no such European commitments, played in full at the Sanlıurfa 11 Nisan Stadium.

Wilfried Zaha, Hakim Ziyech, Davinson Sanchez, Tanguy Ndombele, Serge Aurier and Carlos Vinicius were among their ten options in the dugout.

The Lions have also signed former Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira, former Napoli talisman Dries Mertens and former Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi into their starting XI.

And the gap in class took less than a minute to prove itself, with Icardi scoring after just a minute.

Fenerbahce’s protest comes just weeks after the club’s first-team players were attacked during a Turkish Super Lig match.

The Turkish giants’ 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor was overshadowed by a violent brawl on the pitch.

After the final whistle, several fans came onto the pitch and attempted to attack the players, including former Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi, who attempted to kick a spectator who was running into his direction.

The horrific scenes saw Fenerbache threaten to pull out of the Turkish Super Lig, but members recently voted against the proposal.

Club president Ali Koc said: “In all our meetings, the least preferred option was to withdraw from the league.

“The reason this option is not wanted is because people think we would have to deal in the lower league with the same things we deal with here.

“We are taking this option off the table until the end of season general meeting.”
