Eric Dier doubtful for Real Madrid match after being hit by a ‘blow’ that left him covered in blood

Eric Dier is a doubt for the Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid after suffering a horrific head injury.

The England star was left bleeding from a cut on his head after an incredible goal-saving header in Bayern’s 3-1 defeat to Stuttgart.

Dier has enjoyed a career resurgence since his shock loan to the Bundesliga giants in January which ended his time at Tottenham.

The 30-year-old starred as Bayern beat Spurs rivals Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals – but is now a doubt for the club’s semi-final second leg in Madrid.

Thomas Tuchel’s long injury list prevented Dier from resting in Stuttgart just days before the vital trip to Spain.

Dier immediately showed his worth with a spectacular goal-line clearance in the first half to deny Serhou Guirassy the opening goal.

However, the blow to the head came at a cost as it reopened a cut the defender had suffered earlier in the match.

Dier’s forehead soon began gushing blood and he played heroically until the break, wrapped in a Terry Butcher-style bandage.

A penalty from his former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane sent Bayern level at half-time, but Dier was forced off the field due to his injury.

Speaking after the match, Tuchel told reporters: “Eric had to have his head wound stitched up which then reopened, so we said at one point it was enough. We didn’t want to take risks.”

Dier was replaced in the second half by Dayot Upamecano, with Bayern ultimately losing 3–1.

Tuchel added: “Dier felt a little something in his thigh before the match, but that wasn’t the reason (he was substituted) – it was because of the blow to the head. We couldn’t take any more risks with him.

“We then took a risk with Upa who was not supposed to play more than 30 minutes.

“That has unfortunately been the story of our season.”

Dier now faces a race against time to make Bayern’s traveling squad to face Madrid, with the score at 2-2.

The German team is already without defenders Sacha Boey, Gabriel Marusic, Bouna Sarr and Tarek Buchmann.

Matthijs De Ligt is suffering from an injury himself, while Raphael Guerreiro also suffered an ankle problem against Stuttgart.
