Ed Quigley’s weekend horse racing tips: Top picks for Sandown and Southwell

Top tipster and broadcaster, Ed ‘Longshot Ted’ Quigley is back and presents his best bets for the weekend’s action…

Ted’s 15 Lucky Bets for Saturday, April 27

Find the following choices for Saturday’s races. Bet on the races with our best expert-rated horse racing betting sites:

  • Sandown 3.00 – Jonbon – bet with Bet Copied
  • Sandown 3.35 – We’ve all been trapped ein each direction – bet with BoyleSports
  • Sandown 4.10 – Sir Gerhard andin each direction – bet with Betting on AK
  • Sandown 5.20 – Bad in each direction – bet with bet365

Sandown 3.00 – Jonbon

This should be an absolute boost, and if El Fabiolo gets to the top of his game, he’ll take all the hits. However, coming in after a poor show jumping show at the Cheltenham Festival, taking minimal risks on him on a tricky show jumping track like Sandown would make me nervous. Better ground will help, but I’ll take it on with Nicky Henderson trained JONBON.

The winner of that race 12 months ago is two from two over course and distance, and three from three at Sandown overall. Jonbon got the job done in the Melling Chase last time out and should be firing on all cylinders here. Nico de Boinville rides the 8-year-old, and the Nicky Henderson-trained gelding looks to be the added value to what should be a memorable encounter.

Sandown 3.35 – We’ve all been trapped ein each direction

As you would expect, this looks extremely competitive where many horses can be defended. As an each-way player, Nigel Twiston-Davies trained WE WERE ALL CAUGHT has flattered to deceive on several occasions this season, but should be adjusted by a thorough examination of his endurance as he embarks on this marathon journey for the first time. The 7-year-old has shown some smart form over hurdles and has so far failed to take his game to new levels over larger obstacles.

However, he has very intelligent chasing form in defeat, and that was on his Chase debut at Cheltenham in October, when he was unbeaten far behind Flooring Porter and stablemate Broadway Boy . On better ground here, with a 132 rating, he could easily stay when others have cried enough, and I think he can get involved in the business side of the proceedings from a reciprocal point of view.

Sandown 4.10 – Sir Gerhard each way

SIR GERHARD is a bit of an enigma, but he clearly didn’t stay 3m at the highest level on soft ground during the bombing of the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Since then he has regained his confidence on his last trip to Cork, and running here on the similar trip in which he won his Gallagher Hurdle at the Festival two years ago can see him run a big race, and the conditions underfoot should not be a problem.

Odd And Passe is a class act, and it will be a warm order for that, but he had a tough race in a fight with Langer Dan and Bob Olinger at Aintree only two weeks ago, and he will have to prove he can save it. It’s a great race on paper, and Sir Gerhard has the class to mix it with the best of them.

Sandown 5.20 – Bad in every way

BAD can hopefully result in a description opposite his name, and is the round-trip selection for the Ben Pauling and Ben Jones combination. The tongue tie continues for the first time, and with good ground, and traveling back up, it can make its presence felt. He never covered a meter on the proving ground during the Imperial Cup and should be much more suited to today’s mission.

The cheeks are preserved, and after a nice break, he can present himself in his best form for a yard which has had a fantastic season. It looks like a wide open encounter on paper, but that may go the way of the Naunton Downs team.

  • Southwell 2.40 – Giudecca – bet with Bet Copied
  • Southwell 3.40 – Tritonic – bet with BoyleSports

Southwell 2.40 – Giudecca

Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Kingscote team up with GIUDECCA who came home to win over 7f at Newcastle on her last visit, and can follow that victory up on her seasonal reappearance. Newcastle is a stiff finish, where endurance comes to the fore as she meets the rising ground, and apart from a flash of tail the filly showed no problems with this test, and in my opinion she looked better as she advanced.

The move up to 1m seems like the perfect move for her, and I think she can take her form to new levels here now she’s looking at the Handicap rankings from a rating of 85. This girl unexposed Ulysses is open to any improvement. and gets my nod in this fascinating competition.

Southwell 3.40 – Tritonic

TRITONIC has been an elegant performer for many years on fences, hedges and on the flat. His fires still appear to be burning at the age of seven, and he looks more than capable of turning out here for Alan King’s team with Oisin Murphy in the saddle.

He finished fifth at Kempton on the return track where he would not have been suited to the course of the race. This race should be tailor-made for him, and having been 1lb lighter at a BHA rating of 96, he is no longer handicapped considering he was placed at Royal Ascot 4lbs heavier the last season. In each sense, he seems to have ironclad credentials.
