Day One Aims for $5-6 Million Record Previews

Paramount Prequel A quiet place: first day is heading to a franchise record preview party between $5 to $6 million, several sources inform us. The sessions started at 3 p.m.

Tonight’s figure easily surpasses the $4.3 million generated by the first film in 2018 and the $4.8 million generated by Quiet Place: Part II on Thursday ahead of Memorial Day weekend 2021, when summer kicked off for newly reopened movie theaters.

Both of these films were directed by John Krasinski, while the prequel is directed and written by Pig directed by Michael Sarnoski. The prequel tells the story of how fierce aliens with extremely sensitive ears land on Earth in New York. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou star.

Reviews are excellent with 86% certified fresh, though they are the lowest in the franchise to date after Chapter One (96%) and Chapter Two (91%). CinemaScore comes out tomorrow, but A silent place got a B+, while Part II got an A-.

According to Tracking, this prequel grossed over $40 million for the weekend, and given that it’s a genre film, it can get some hype. Previews of the first film accounted for 23% of its $18.8 million Friday haul, en route to a $50.2 million 3-day weekend, while previews of the second installment accounted for 25% of its $19.3 million debut Friday for a 3-day weekend at $47.5 million, 4 days at $57 million over Memorial Day weekend. It’s too early to tell if there’s a “5” in front Day oneit’s the opening. The Platinum Dunes production is rated PG-13. Paramount held the New York premiere last night at AMC Lincoln Center.

Warner Bros.

At this point, we’re hearing about $1 million to $1.5 million for Kevin Costner’s expensive three-hour epic, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. At that level he could get the theatrical release from New Line, which is a distribution deal, $12 million. Realize that this older title is a slow movie and not a one-off weekend opener. It’s best to gauge the success of this film in its first ten days, as many are taking a summer vacation this week.

Critical reviews stand at 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t as bad as Costner’s. The postman at 14%, but close Water World‘s 47% Rotten (which he produced), but as part of his 2003 film Open range (79% certified fresh), and its multi-Oscar winning Dance with Wolves (87% certified fresh). Of his westerns, Open range opened with a high of $14 million, was distributed by Disney and ended its run at $58.3 million.

That figure is 2% ahead of Barbie, The film, which grossed $394.4 million in the same period, finished with $636.2 million.
