Customers are upset after Costco changes rotisserie chicken

Some Costco customers are crying foul after the retailer changed the packaging of its popular rotisserie chickens.

Previously, rotisserie chickens were packaged in a plastic “clamshell” container. Now, in what the warehouse club considers an environmentally friendly move, rotisserie chickens are sold in plastic catering bags.

The packaging change began in March 2024 and has gradually been rolled out across the United States, Consumer Reports magazine reported.

COSTCO CEO SAYS 1 ITEM IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVERYTHING SOLD IN THE STORE

In the June 2024 issue of its Costco Connections magazine, Costco explained that the packaging change would save millions of pounds of plastic each year.

“You may have noticed a classic Costco item in a different container: Kirkland Signature™ Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken now comes in a bag. Based on projected 2024 U.S. rotisserie chicken sales, the new packaging will save an estimated 17 million pounds of plastic each year,” Costco said.

“The bag also takes up less space to carry; one pallet of new bags equals five pallets of old packaging, allowing Costco to take 1,000 of its freight trucks off the road each year. Using fewer transport vehicles will eliminate more than 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year,” they said.

On social media, many people have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new packaging, which they consider inferior to the previous rigid plastic model.

“To be honest, it was a rare Costco L,” business journalist Trung Phan posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, on June 22.

The bags, he said, are extremely leak-proof, are less suitable for storing leftovers and customers “can’t choose the right chickens.”

Another user on X complained that the bags were leaking.

“Your new roast chicken bags are leaking like crazy. The whole trunk was soaked when I got home. Two bags are both leaking,” said X user @rengle83.

On Reddit, the subreddit r/Costco is full of posts about the bags that have been making their way into stores across the United States for the past few months.

“New rotisserie chicken packaging seems prone to leaks,” Reddit user “LoveOfSpreadsheets” posted on March 28, alongside an image of a leaking bag of rotisserie chicken on a store shelf.

Several Reddit users pointed out that the new bags were not recyclable in their cities, unlike rigid clamshell containers.

“Unfortunately, at least in my area, bags are not eligible for curbside recycling. As a result, most of them will end up in landfill,” said Reddit user “bonsree,” adding that the packaging change is “a leap backwards in my opinion.”

“My city can’t recycle plastic bags. But we can recycle hard plastics,” said user “trowdatawhey.”

Costco’s rotisserie chicken has been selling for $4.99 at all warehouses for decades and is one of the most popular items sold at the chain.

In January 2024, Costco CEO Ron Vachris said the company sold 137 million rotisserie chickens in 2023, an increase of 20 million over 2022 sales figures.
