If you want to know how high standards Manchester City have set for themselves, just take a look at much of the recent talk.

It is true that Pep Guardiola’s team has not been at its best in terms of performance. They were below par in a 0-0 draw with Arsenal last weekend, as their Premier League title rivals successfully blanked them at the Etihad Stadium.

But anyone who doesn’t follow English football too closely would be baffled by the negative connotations attached to recent talk of the reigning champions.

City are on course to win a fourth title on the bounce. They also qualified for the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Bookmakers place them among the favorites in both knockout tournaments.

Take a step back and you’ll see that City have won 18 of their last 21 matches in all competitions. The only teams they have failed to beat in this series are Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, but City have not lost any of those matches either.

Yes, their football hasn’t been as dazzling as in previous campaigns. But City are seasoned winners and, more often than not, they find a way to get the job done, even when they are below their best. This is the sign of a very good team.

None of this means that City will necessarily win the title this season. Arsenal and Liverpool pose an almighty challenge.

But Guardiola must have been delighted with the way his side performed in the second half of Wednesday’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa. City looked stylish again, with hat-trick hero Phil Foden leading the way with a superb display.

A trip to Crystal Palace is the final challenge awaiting Guardiola’s men, but they should meet it without too much difficulty.

Manchester City will be keen to beat Crystal Palace from the start on Saturday.

Crystal Palace won their first match under the tutelage of Oliver Glasner, beating 10-man Burnley 3-0. They haven’t had much to celebrate since, however.

Palace have collected just two points from the last 12 available. Their last outing ended in a 1-0 defeat against Bournemouth in which they created very few chances.

The only teams Palace have beaten since September are Burnley, Brentford and Sheffield United. It’s worrying, even though they probably have enough to stay awake.

An eight-point buffer above the bottom three indeed means Palace are likely to survive, but they will struggle to get anything going against City this weekend – and Liverpool when they next meet.

It will be interesting to see what Guardiola chooses to do with De Bruyne and Haaland on Saturday.

The rest may have done both players good, but they have been below par of late and City looked fluid and threatening without them against Aston Villa, especially in the second half.
