Novelty artist Viggo Venn has been branded “the stupidest act we’ve had this year” by Britain’s Got Talent head judge Simon Cowell.
Controversial Britain’s Got Talent winner Viggo Venn has revealed why he was not invited to the show’s final on Sunday night.
The 2023 champion was called “the stupidest act we’ve had this year” by judge Simon Cowell. The 35-year-old Norwegian clown walked away with the £250,000 prize and the coveted spot to perform in front of Prince William and Kate at the Royal Albert Hall However, his win was not well received by everyone.
Some fans were so annoyed by Viggo’s victory that complaints were made to Ofcom despite it being a public vote. He later admitted he was “embarrassed” to win the top prize when reacting to boos heard when his name was announced – but later said his fate was “not his fault”.
He was certainly one of the most unique artists to ever appear on the ITV talent show and Viggo received a standing ovation for his debut performance which saw him dance to Daft Punk’s hit One More Time as he was removing a seemingly endless series of high visibility vests.
After Sydnie Christmas won the award on Sunday night, the former winner congratulated the singer on social media and explained why he wasn’t at the show. “Congratulations to the new winner of Britain’s Got Talent @bgt @sydniechristmas!” he captioned the video.
“You absolutely smashed it tonight, I wish you a very visible year full of fantastic performances! It’s been a crazy year for me, tonight I was playing my sold out show in Basingstoke. It’s been so much fun to touring the UK, making young and old laugh and audiences show up in high visibility all over this beautiful country!”
In the video, Viggo was on stage talking to the camera while the audience applauded Daft Punk’s One More Time. He said: “It’s been so much fun performing on the show, thank you very much! I’ve been wondering about being the winner of Britain’s Got Talent for a year, but now I’m no longer a champion. Congratulations to the new winner .”
Viggo was booed by some audience members during the finale. Controversially, inspirational dancer Musa Motha – whose leg was amputated when he was just 11 – failed to make the top three, as did incredible opera singer Malakai Bayoh.
After the result was announced, some of the audience could be heard booing and viewers took to Twitter to voice their opinions. One even claimed: “This is by far the worst Britain’s Got Talent result EVER. If this is truly genuine, then British voters should be ashamed and embarrassed. Boos from the audience, and rightly so. There is a lack of real talent. Joke. #BGT2023 #BritainsGotTalent #BGT.”
Some fans were so annoyed that Viggo won that they complained to regulator Ofcom despite it being a public vote. He then admitted he was “embarrassed” to win the show while reacting to the booing controversy – but said it was “not his fault”. He said: “I was kind of hoping not to win because it would be very embarrassing, but I was very happy when they said the British public had such a ridiculous sense of humour.”
