Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo are great featherweight champs but Dana White believes greatest tag belongs elsewhere

Dana White thinks Max Holloway is the greatest featherweight of all time.

The Hawaiian striker reigned supreme in the 145-pound division for two years before finally being dethroned by Alexander Volkanovski in 2019.

Holloway is currently tied with Darren Elkins for the most fights at featherweight (26) and stands above all others when it comes to the most wins in the division (20).

There are certainly compelling arguments to be made for Holloway being the best featherweight of all time, but others would argue that Volkanovski and Jose Aldo replace him based on the fact that they defended the featherweight strap more of times.

Holloway has retained his belt three times while Aldo tops the list with seven title defenses, closely followed by Volkanovski with five.

Of course, there is no right answer to the question “who is the greatest” and it all depends on what criteria you favor.

Some fans may even choose Conor McGregor as the featherweight GOAT because of his undeniable impact on the sport.

But Holloway, who faces Justin Gaethje this weekend at UFC 300 for the BMF (Baddest Mother f***er) belt, is White’s choice.

“Max Holloway, always a big fan favorite,” White told First Take with Stephen A. Smith.

“Probably the greatest featherweight of all time, taking on Gaethje, who is a human highlight.”

Holloway moves up to 155 pounds to face Gaethje in what will be the third BMF title fight since Jorge Masvidal defeated Nate Diaz for the inaugural belt in 2019.

The symbolic strap was then put back into play four years later when Gaethje and Dustin Poirier faced off at UFC 291.

Gaethje knocked out Poirier in the second round with a vicious head kick to win the title and will now defend it against Holloway on April 13.

Explaining the origins of the creation of the BMF, White added: “The idea of the ‘BMF’ was built right here in this room.

“There’s always those fights that the fans love, whether it’s Masvidal versus Diaz, you know, those kinds of fights – Gaethje and Holloway.

“We were sitting here one day and thinking about building this ‘BMF’ title and who is better suited for it than Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway?

“We thought about it here. I said to the guys, ‘Tell me if I’m crazy, but what do you think of this idea?’ They loved it, the fans loved it, and here we go.
