Charli XCX Endorses Kamala Harris With Viral ‘Brat’ Post Adopted By Presidential Campaign

In an effort to boost her credibility with young voters, Harris’ campaign is leaning on the support of singer Charli XCX and tapping into some of the other memes that have long circulated about the vice president.

Just hours after President Joe Biden stepped down from the campaign trail and endorsed Harris for the Democratic nomination, Charli XCX posted on X, “kamala IS brat.” The post has been viewed more than 10 million times and received about 200,000 likes.

The Harris campaign quickly embraced the singer’s support, changing the profile picture on Kamala HQ’s X feed to a green background and lettering style that matched the singer’s “Brat” album cover.

After Charli XCX released her album “Brat” on June 7, some fans went so far as to dub this summer “the summer of Brat.” In a TikTok video, the singer explained what she means by “brat”:

“You’re just like this girl who’s a little messy and likes to party and sometimes says stupid things. Who feels like herself but also maybe has a nervous breakdown. But she parties, she’s very honest, very direct. A little volatile. She does stupid things. But she’s a kid. You’re a kid. She’s a kid.”

The viral connection between Harris and the album exploded on Sunday, with some fans producing videos combining clips of Harris with songs from the album, and even remixes featuring audio of Harris speaking.

Other memes that have circulated about Harris in the past have gained new momentum, including references to a May 10, 2023 speech in which she recalled her mother once telling her, “Do you think you just fell out of a coconut tree?”

Republicans used the clip to mock Harris, but her supporters embraced the quote.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis showed his support for the new party frontrunner by simply posting emojis of a coconut, palm tree and American flag.
