Celeste Manno’s grieving mother speaks out on The Project in scathing attack on Albo and governments in the fight against violence against women

Celeste Manno’s heartbroken mother has blasted Anthony Albanese and key government figures for not doing enough to tackle violence against women and said she didn’t want to “hear their excuses”.

A tired Aggie Di Mauro did not hesitate to brutally attack the Prime Minister and other politicians during an emotional appearance on Channel Ten’s The Project on Monday evening.

She has spent the past three years fighting for justice and change after her daughter Celeste, 23, was stabbed up to 23 times by a former colleague while she slept at her home in Melbourne in November 2020.

Ms Di Mauro accused politicians of not taking action or having “the courage to do anything”.

“We don’t have the right politicians, it’s as simple as that. We have a government in power, well I wasted three and a half years of my time with them, so that’s not the government I want to deal with,” she fumed.

“We all say enough is enough!” It is our daughters who are killed, not theirs. There are solutions. They don’t want to put ankle bracelets on these beasts.

“If an anklet had been worn on the beast that murdered my daughter, we would have at least had a chance to get the hell out of this house.” »

Luay Nader Sako, 39, stabbed Ms Manno, 23, up to 23 times on November 16, 2020, while she slept in her own bed in Mernda, in Melbourne’s north-east, where she thought she was in security.

Sako, who was stalking Ms Manno, avoided life in prison and was sentenced to 36 years in prison. He will be eligible for parole in 2054.

Ms Di Mauro said the reviews politicians continue to promise are a waste of taxpayers’ money.

“We had a really good response from the Victorian Law Reform Commission because of what happened to Celeste,” she recalls.

“Quick solution, they made 46 recommendations, Victoria buried them.

“I was there when they filed them, they were filed under about 51 other reports.

“I was promised they would be implemented.”

Ms Di Mauro accused politicians and the attorney general of delaying any action and meeting her as promised.

She also implored Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to get involved.

“The leaders of the opposition (from Victoria), I met them both, John Pesutto and Michael O’Brien, I shook hands on the way out, they wanted me to absolutely believe that this is what they are here to do, to hold our government accountable,” she said.

“They asked a question about recommendations, and that was last October.

“That doesn’t mean people need to be held to account. So maybe, I don’t know, who do we call? Can Mr. Dutton step in and do something here?’

Legal experts oppose ankle bracelets.

“A breach of an intervention order does not mean that person is an offender at that point, okay? This would therefore infringe on his civil liberties and freedom of movement,” Ms Di Mauro said.

“What I say, I don’t care about their freedom. Her freedom of movement put Celeste six feet under.

At the time of Sako’s sentencing in February, Ms. Di Mauro screamed in rage in court as she tore up a speech she had prepared to read if Judge Dixon had delivered the desired result.

“We were forced to trust a system in which we had lost confidence three years ago. It failed Celeste then and it’s done it again now,” she said.

“Today’s result proves how flawed the justice system is.”
