Cannes 2024: Anasuya Sengupta, awarded the Un Certain Regard Prize, becomes the first Indian to win the Best Actress Prize
An overwhelmed Anasuya dedicated the award to queer and other marginalized communities for “bravely fighting a war they shouldn’t have to fight.”
“You don’t have to be queer to fight for equality, you don’t have to be colonized to know how pathetic colonizers are. We just have to be very, very honest human beings,” she said to cheers and applause, Variety reported.
In a video that went viral on social media, Anasuya gets emotional when her name is announced for this award.
Alongside it, the film by Chinese director Hu Guan Black Dog won the Cannes Un Certain Regard Prize, while the Jury Prize went to Souleymane’s story. Notably, Un Certain Regard is a special section of the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival.
Before this big victory, another proud moment came after that of the FTII. The sunflowers were the first to know And Rabbit won first and third prize in the La Cinef Selection.

Directed by Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov, The shameless shows the journey of two sex workers. Sengupta, who plays sex worker Renuka, runs away from a brothel after killing a police officer and ends up seeking refuge in a community of sex workers.
It is there that she meets another young girl, Devika (Omara Shetty), also condemned to a life of prostitution. They soon develop a bond that blossoms into a forbidden romance.
Anasuya Sengupta is from Kolkata. After completing her studies at Jadavpur University, Sengupta moved to Mumbai, where she worked as a decorator for several years.
One of her most prominent acting roles came with Anjan Dutta’s 2009 film, Crazy Bangalee. His previous credits also include Do not forget me And Masaba Masaba.
