Canelo Álvarez vs Jaime Munguia Preview: Betting Tips and Odds

Two of Mexico’s most exciting boxers will clash this Saturday evening (Sunday morning UK time) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas when Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez takes on the undefeated Jaime Munguia.

The IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles will all be on the line as Munguia looks to make a name for himself against one of the most tenacious and respected boxers on the planet.

In this Álvarez vs Munguia betting preview, I give my thoughts on the fight, see who the bookmakers think will have the hand raised, and more.

Current Canelo Álvarez vs. Jaime Munguia odds

Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez is the clear bookmakers’ favorite for Saturday’s encounter.

The best value on Álvarez to win is 1/4 with Betfair.

If you want to back Jamie Munguia for the surprise victory, he can be found at 9/2 with Sky Bet. A draw is priced at 25/1.

Best bookmakers to bet on Álvarez vs Munguia

Check out my list below, where I’ve rounded up the most generous odds for the Álvarez vs Munguia fight from the top UK boxing bookmakers.

Canelo Álvarez’s record

Few active boxers in the world can boast a legacy as rich and rich as Canelo’s. The Mexican enters the ring on Saturday with 64 fights under his belt, including 60 victories, two draws and two defeats.

The fighter has only lost one fight in the last ten years, a UD loss to Dmitry Bivol at T-Mobile Arena in 2022. He has rebounded since, scoring three straight UD wins against Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder and, most recently, Jermell Charlo.

The 33-year-old has never been knocked out and, although he is six years older than his opponent this weekend, he has been just as active, as this is his third fight in the Last 12 months.

The Ring and ESPN rank Álvarez as the number 4 and 5 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, respectively, and he will look to score a dominant victory to cement his position as the world’s greatest super middleweight this weekend.

Review of Jaime Munguia

Jaime Munguia will step into the ring this weekend with a point to prove. The 27-year-old Mexican fighter has a perfect record, having won all 43 of his professional fights so far.

Munguia is not a man who jokes either; he has a 79% knockout record, winning 34 of his 43 fights by putting his opponent on the mat.

In fact, four of his last five fights have ended this way, with his most recent outing seeing him pick up a TKO victory over John Ryder in January.

Saturday’s clash with Álvarez will be his third fight since last June, when he beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko, one of nine opponents Munguia failed to stop.

Canelo is, without a doubt, the toughest test of Munguia’s career to date, and a victory against him would cement his position as one of the most dynamic names in the boxing world.

Álvarez vs Munguia betting tips and odds

With Álvarez the hot favorite for this weekend’s clash, I’ve looked at some of the alternative markets and shortlisted three selections that I believe offer excellent value for money.

Saúl Álvarez by decision of 10/11 (bet365)

Álvarez is the clear favorite for Saturday’s showdown, so backing him in the results market will present better value for punters. Munguia is sure to come out of the blocks fighting and could look to secure a headline-grabbing knockout.

However, Álvarez is the more experienced of the two fighters and will no doubt use his superior in-ring IQ to keep his opponent at bay.

While Álvarez aimed for the KO on 11/20 with PariMGM is also appealing, I’ll stick to the forms and back Canelo to win by decision at 10/11.

🥊 Bet on Álvarez to win by decision on 10/11 with bet365 🥊

Fight to go the distance – Yes on 08/15 (VBET)

As his 43-0 record suggests, Jamie Munguia is no pushover. The Tijuana native will be a tough test for Canelo and will certainly be difficult to take down.

Munguia has shown he has serious knockout potential, and Canelo may not want to get into a shooting contest with his right hand.

As such, I recommend supporting the fight to go the distance at 8/15 with VBET.

🥊 Bet on the fight to go the distance at 15/8 with VBET🥊

Jamie Munguia by KO/TKO at 10/1 (Sky Bet)

If the boxing world has reminded me of anything in recent weeks, it’s that anything can happen once the bell rings.

While I wouldn’t back it myself, if you’re looking for a real outside bet that provides value, then a Munguia KO win at 10/1 could be for you.

This weekend’s fight with Álvarez is a potentially stellar encounter for Munguia, and what better way to make a name for himself than to join Floyd Mayweather and Dmitry Bivol as one of the only fighters to defeat Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez.

He would also become the first to eliminate him.

🥊 Bet on Munguia to win by KO/TKO at 10/1 with Sky Bet🥊

Its odds fluctuate depending on which top UK bookmaker you use, with Betfair putting it at 1/4 and other companies offering similar prices.

What is the weight category for the Álvarez vs. Munguia fight?

Álvarez vs Munguia will take place in the super middleweight division. The fight will last 12 rounds, with a weight limit of 168 pounds.

This is only Munguia’s third fight at this weight.

Who has more professional fights, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez or Jaime Munguia?

Canelo is the more experienced of the two fighters this weekend. The 33-year-old has competed in 64 fights, with Munguia having 43 to his name.

Although Munguia has fewer fights than Álvarez, he remains an incredibly experienced fighter, with both men having had their share of battles over the years.

Who has more victories in his professional career, Canelo or Munguia?

With more fights under his belt, it’s no surprise that Álvarez has also racked up more victories.

Canelo has won 60 fights, while Munguia has won 43. However, it is worth noting that Munguia has a 100% record, having never lost, something Álvarez cannot claim.

Who has more knockouts in his career, Álvarez or Munguia?

Once again, Álvarez wins here, with 39 KO victories to Munguia’s 34. However, Munguia has a much higher knockout percentage over his career than Álvarez.

What is at stake if the Munguias win?

Canelo puts his IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles on the line against Munguia in Las Vegas this weekend.

If Munguia is victorious, that victory will also have the potential to propel him into the division and make headlines around the world.

Are there any undercard fights you should pay attention to?

Fans at T-Mobile Arena are in for a treat this Saturday night, with the undercard featuring a handful of exciting fights.

Mario Barrios will defend his WBC interim welterweight title against Fabian Maidana. Former world champion Barrios will be looking for his second consecutive victory in the arena, having defeated Yordenis Ugás there in September.

He is the heavy favorite for the fight, with BetUK pegging him at 1/10. If you want to shake things up, Maidana is available until 6/1.

Brandon Figueroa will also defend his WBC interim featherweight title against Jessie Magdaleno. The fight should be a routine victory for Figeurora, who, although less experienced than his opponent, enters the fight in much better shape.

His last outing saw him defeat Mark Magsayo to win the aforementioned title belt, while his opponent’s last outing saw him lose to Raymond Ford in San Antonio.

If you want to back Figueroa, he’s the big favorite at 1/16 with bet365, with Magdaleno eliminated at 17/2.
