Vincent Kompany’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday which sealed their fate in the Premier League’s bottom three for the campaign.
Ahead of Saturday’s match at Tottenham, the Clarets were in the most precarious position behind relegation-threatened rivals Luton Town and Nottingham Forest.
Burnley’s 4-1 home defeat to Newcastle last Saturday left them five points behind with a goal difference 17 worse than Forest’s.
Kompany’s side were expected to win in the capital and hope that Chelsea prevailed at the City Ground – but that second scenario proved irrelevant following their defeat to Spurs.

They made a dream start by taking a surprise lead, but goals from Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven extinguished hopes of a great escape as Burnley now begin to plan for life in the Second Division.
Jacob Bruun Larsen had struck for the Clarets in the first half, but Spurs defenders fought back to ensure Burnley will play in the Championship next season.
Following the defeat in north London, they find themselves 19th in the table – two points behind Luton and five points behind Forest.
