Man City fans think one of their own wrecked Bernardo Silva’s penalty in Real Madrid defeat

Some Manchester City fans were furious that one of their own forced Bernardo Silva to wait before his missed penalty in Real Madrid’s defeat.

European champions City crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday as Madrid beat them on penalties in the quarter-finals.

Silva put his effort straight into the gloves of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who didn’t have to move, before Mateo Kovacic also managed to convert.

But rather than criticizing Portuguese midfielder Silva, City fans found themselves pointing the finger at someone behind the goal.

With Pep Guardiola’s side leading the shootout after Luka Modric’s miss, Silva’s penalty was delayed by a City fan holding the ball in the stands.

The 29-year-old, who stood there for 40 seconds, was visibly frustrated and eventually ran towards the crowd to claim the ball.

Taking to force to miss your penalty?

“If so, can you name him, so we can make sure he never buys a drink in Manchester again.”

Another said: “Special mention to the City supporter who held the ball for a few unnecessary extra seconds which meant Silva was waiting to pick up his pen.”

Third put: “The fan(s) were keeping the ball before Bernardo Silva’s penalty… it’s just confusing. Time and place!”

Meanwhile, Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor insisted that while the fan didn’t help Silva’s cause, the City star can’t shift blame for such a poor penalty .

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: “In the end Silva ran and got the ball himself. In his mind he must have thought: ‘I’m waiting here’.

Noel Gallagher predicts Arsenal will win the Premier League title against Manchester City and Liverpool this season

“When you are at this level, at this level of player, it shouldn’t affect you.

“You should know your corners.”

He added: “Silva will look back and ask himself, ‘Why did I do that?’ This is not a penalty for a shootout.

“The goalkeeper must have known he was going to try his luck as soon as he took off.”
