They just went and did it again. This is not the first time in recent weeks that Bayer Leverkusen scored a late goal on Thursday night to preserve their unbeaten record.

Roma was their opponent this time. THE Giallorossi took a 2-0 lead at the BayArena, restoring parity on aggregate in the Europa League semi-finals.

Leverkusen relied on a touch of luck to pull one back via a Gianluca Mancini own goal in the 81st minute. But it looked like their season-long unbeaten streak would finally end when they failed to equalize in the designated six minutes of stoppage time.

Not so fast. This is truly a team that doesn’t know when it’s beaten. In the seventh minute of extra time, Josip Stanisic found the back of the net to bring Leverkusen level on the night.

It was an unusual situation. Leverkusen led 3-2 over the two legs, so Roma pushed forward in a bid to force extra time.

Yet, because they are striving to remain undefeated the entire campaign in all competitions, Leverkusen have not been content to sit idly by. They too wanted a goal in the final stages.

Indeed, the substitution that brought Stanisic onto the pitch in place of Jérémie Frimpong was in fact a defense-focused substitution, with Xabi Alonso prioritizing protecting his team’s overall advantage.

To summarize Leverkusen’s season, it was Stanisic who extended his unbeaten run to 49 matches. They thus established a new European record, surpassing the Benfica team which went 48 matches without defeat between December 1963 and February 1965.

Leverkusen must now turn their attention to the Bundesliga. Bochum, still fighting for its elite status towards the bottom end of the division, is its latest opponent.

Bochum and Augsburg await them in the Bundesliga, before Alonso’s side face Atalanta in the Europa League final on May 22. Three days later, Leverkusen will face second division Kaiserslautern for the DFB-Pokal.

Winning all three trophies would be special enough. It’s already the greatest season in Leverkusen’s history, but becoming the first German club to win the treble would take it to another level.

It began to feel like Bochum was a sinking stone and could not be saved.

Before their last match in April, they were on an eight-match winless streak that had taken them from 11th to 16th, the relegation play-off spot.

However, it seems that the decision to replace Thomas Letsch with Heiko Butscher could pay off. A 3-2 defeat to Hoffenheim followed by a 4-3 win over relegation rivals Union Berlin left Bochum within touching distance of safety.

Having scored seven goals in their last two matches, Butscher’s team can find the net against a Bayer Leverkusen side who have not had as much time to prepare for Sunday’s showdown.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Player of the Year award will be more hotly contested than the Bundesliga title race this season.

Frimpong, Alex Grimaldo, Granit Xhaka, Florian Wirtz and Victor Boniface are among the main contenders, but the club’s success is actually a collective effort.

Patrik Schick probably won’t win the award, but he too made a vital contribution throughout the campaign.
