Billy Vunipola will face no sanction from his club Saracens over his drunken argument at a Majorca nightclub where he was tasered by police – and he will return to training today

  • Vunipola was arrested on Sunday and tasted twice by police in a Mallorca club
  • He faced a “quick trial”, then a fine and a four-month suspended prison sentence.
  • Saracens now consider the incident closed and want to focus on the Premiership title

Billy Vunipola is set to avoid any further sanctions from Saracens after the club completed an internal investigation into his arrest in Mallorca.

Number 8 Vunipola will return to training with Mark McCall’s men at their St Albans base today, just four days after his career was thrown into doubt.

He was shot by police for resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer during a team-building trip to the Balearic Islands.

But Saracens are now ready to move on from the controversy surrounding his arrest.

Prominent Saracens figures have spoken about the events which led to Vunipola, 31, being Tasered twice in a Palma bar in the early hours of Sunday. Vunipola, drunk and shirtless, was restrained and taken to hospital where he had to be tied to a bed.

He then faced an “express” court trial where he was fined €240 (£205) and given a four-month suspended prison sentence.

Saracens’ view is that the Mallorca incident is now over and the focus must now be on the team’s bid to defend their Gallagher Premiership crown.

There is also a desire to look after the personal welfare of Vunipola, who has been a titanic figure for Saracens over the years, winning English and European league titles. Vunipola had been sober since 2022 before the Mallorca incident. It is also recognized that Vunipola’s remaining time at Saracens is limited given he is expected to leave the club at the end of the season and sign for French club Montpellier.

Vunipola’s move to Montpellier is still expected to go ahead despite the arrest in Mallorca.

Saracens, last season’s Premiership champions, are second in the table after a 15-12 victory over Bath last Friday. It was after this match that the team and staff went to a planned social evening abroad.

Vunipola hasn’t been as central a figure for Saracens this season as in previous campaigns, but he will surely want to end his final season at the club on a high.

Former London Irish and England winger turned Premiership TV pundit Topsy Ojo believes Vunipola and Saracens will come together in the wake of the Mallorca incident and cannot be stopped from winning another title .

“Whatever happens, at this time of year, Saracens are content to zone,” Ojo said. “It’s almost like nothing from the outside can penetrate this force field that they can create.”

“This season, all eyes have been on teams like Northampton and Bath. Not many people talk about Saracens, which is probably exactly what they like.

“Now all of a sudden Saracens are second and within sight of a home semi-final. Whatever happens with Billy, I’m sure Saracens will rally around each other and be ready and all weapons will be ready for this Bristol match It’s going to be a huge match because if Bristol beat them their play-off place could be in jeopardy I don’t think the outside distractions will get to them at all.

While Vunipola is expected to be available for Saracens’ final Premiership matches at Bristol and at home to Sale, teammate Maro Itoje is doubtful for those matches.

Itoje faced a disciplinary hearing for a dangerous tackle on Bath’s Alfie Barbeary last night and will learn his fate today. If Itoje is found guilty, he will likely be suspended for two or three matches.
