The powers that be at West Ham United have a big decision to make this summer.
David Moyes’ contract expires on June 30 and all talk of a possible extension has remained silent. We don’t yet know if we’re nearing the end of the Scot’s second term at the helm of the London club.
It’s hard to argue with Moyes’ results at the London Stadium. He led West Ham out of relegation danger in 2019/20, then twice finished in the Premier League’s top seven on the bounce.
West Ham took a step backwards domestically last season, but they more than made up for that by winning the Europa Conference League, the club’s first piece of silverware since 1980.
For many Hammers fans, the 2-1 victory over Fiorentina on June 7, 2023 was the best night of their footballing lives – and Moyes was the manager who gave it to them. Still, the jury is out on whether or not he should be offered a new contract.
This is not due to the results, which have again been generally positive this season.
West Ham are through to the knockout stages of the Europa League for the second time under Moyes. They are currently seventh in the Premier League, in a good position to qualify for next season’s edition of that competition.
If anything, the grumbles against Moyes’ pragmatic playing style are growing louder. Those keen to see a change in the dugout argue the former Everton boss is not the right man to get the best out of attacking mavericks like Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus.
Even if he is offered a new contract, Moyes may decide he has taken West Ham as far as he can. For now, however, the coach will focus entirely on the rest of the season, starting with Thursday’s fearsome clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

That in itself will be difficult: Bayer Leverkusen have led at the break in 64% of their league matches this season, although they started slowly in both legs of their last-16 clash against Qarabag.
The removal of the away goals rule arguably reduces the incentive for visiting teams to attack on the road, so West Ham will be content to sit back knowing that a draw would be a positive result for them.
