As well as ending their long wait for silverware, they also ended Bayer Leverkusen’s record unbeaten run.
Ademola Lookman’s hat-trick handed the Bundesliga champions their first defeat in 51 games this season.

Xabi Alonso gave his opinion on the final defeat.
The Leverkusen coach told TNT Sports: “Absolutely. We didn’t plan to have a bad day today, but it wasn’t meant to be.
“We couldn’t face many difficult situations that we were preparing for because Atalanta demands a lot from you.
“One-on-one situations, duels, but we didn’t get the ball in the right situations to take advantage. They do that so well.
“We couldn’t come back and get that back. It wasn’t supposed to happen.
“The invincibility streak is over but congratulations to Atalanta, they deserve it, so nothing more to say.”

Granit Xhaka said Leverkusen “don’t care” about their unbeaten record after losing for the first time this season tonight.
“Honestly, the unbeaten record doesn’t interest us,” Xhaka said. “From the beginning, we didn’t worry about it.
“It’s about the match and unfortunately we lost a final today. That’s football.
“We said yesterday that it would be a difficult match. Congratulations to Atalanta.”
