Armed road rage incident under investigation in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) – It started out as a routine trip for a Virginia Beach mother Tuesday morning.

She headed north on First Colonial Road and, as a Hampton Roads Transit bus lumbered near westbound Interstate 264, she decided to change lanes.

Seconds later, she feared it might be her last trip, as she said someone she described as an older man in a van pointed a gun at her.

“And I was getting into the left lane – I guess he didn’t want me to get into his lane, and he stepped on the gas and almost hit me,” said the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous . “So it kind of shocked me when we got to the light that branches off where there’s a turn lane to go to 64 West right there and First Colonial before Target. He pulled up next to me, pointed the gun at me, and took off on 264 West.

The mother, married to a retired Navy SEAL, said the gun-wielding man drove a distinctive Chevrolet pickup truck.

“It was yellow,” she said. “I think the tires were a little bigger than normal. It had a Z71 and black stickers on the front, right above the tire up there. And I think there were some toppings too. It’s not something you buy from the factory.

Terrified, she called 911 and, she said, a Virginia Beach city police officer responded.

“The officer stopped at the parking lot and at my doctor’s office,” she said. “And unfortunately, since I don’t have a license plate number, there’s really nothing they can do. And he said it happens every day.

Last year, the driver of a red sports car was caught on camera and arrested for incidents in Newport News and Virginia Beach.

The incident on First Colonial Road was confirmed by Virginia Beach police. Virginia State Police said Wednesday they received a BOLO (be on the lookout) request from VBPD for a bright yellow pickup truck related to a brandishing call, and that they were not investigating the incident.

“It was very terrifying,” the woman said. “And he just looked really, really angry.” And I mean, I’ve never been on the side of a gun in my life. And, you know, thank God for that.

The mother describes the suspect as an older white man with light, thinning hair.
