Apple’s new iPhone feature reduces motion sickness with animated dots

Google isn’t the only tech giant announcing new automotive features, as Apple has revealed a handful of CarPlay updates. The company also introduced vehicle motion signals for iPhone and iPad.

Starting with the latter, Vehicle Motion Cues aim to reduce motion sickness when traveling in moving vehicles. As Apple explains, “Motion sickness is usually caused by a sensory conflict between what a person sees and what they feel.” In this case, the screen you are looking at is still while you feel the vehicle moving.

To help reduce this effect, vehicle motion cues will display animated dots at the edges of the screen to represent changes in how the vehicle is moving. As an example, turning left would show points moving to the right, while turning right would show points moving to the left. When accelerating, the dots move from the top of the screen to the bottom, then reverse when braking.

Although it seems more distracting than useful, some people might enjoy it. Apple also noted that vehicle motion signals can be set to display automatically or can be turned on and off through Control Center.

Next, CarPlay gets an assortment of new accessibility features, including voice control. It allows users to navigate and control applications with just their voice.

Additionally, the new sound recognition feature aims to help people who are deaf or hard of hearing by displaying visual alerts when the system hears car horns or sirens. Finally, color filters will make CarPlay’s interface easier to read and use for colorblind people.
