Apple now considers its first HomePod to be ‘vintage’

I recently visited a museum that had a lineup of first-generation iPods and iPhones on display. It was horrifying. Now, Apple is the one responsible for my shock, thanks to new items added to its list of vintage and obsolete products on July 1st. The tech giant added the first-generation HomePod to its list of vintage products. Apple typically labels a product as “vintage” if it has been out of production for at least five years. However, Apple only stopped producing the HomePod three years ago. These products can still be repaired, as long as parts are available.

Apple first announced the HomePod in June 2017 and released it in February of the following year for $349. The device featured an A8 chip, high-quality audio, and compatibility with Apple’s ecosystem, such as AirPlay.

The first-generation HomePod isn’t the only notable addition to the vintage product list. Apple has declared its original AirPods to be a vintage product. The AirPods first appeared in December 2016 for $159 and have since evolved into multiple generations and a Pro model. After seven years, Apple will label the first-generation HomePod and AirPods as obsolete, meaning the company will discontinue all hardware service for them.
