American tennis star Danielle Collins applauds spectator during Madrid Open clash
Danielle Collins has demanded “more respect” from a Madrid Open spectator after she appeared upset.
The world No. 13 had lost a set to Jaqueline Cristian in their third round match when she chose to react to the disruption.
Just as Collins was about to serve in the second set, she turned to one of the stands and was heard saying, “You go out and play.”
“Come here and do what I do, okay? Have a little more respect.”
It’s unclear who she was talking to or what prompted her to clap, but it clearly distracted her from the action on the field.
Collins’ response was met with applause from other members of the crowd in the Spanish capital before she prepared to serve.
The American won the point with an ace before appearing to turn towards the spectator in question and shout at him in celebration.
With Collins then holding the advantage, she unleashed another powerful serve and won the match as Cristian’s return was canceled out.
It’s clear the 30-year-old wanted to prove something, and she did just that by winning the second set to level the score.
Collins then won the third and final set, with her 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory sealing her place in the fourth round of the competition.
It was certainly an impressive way to respond to the viewer and his resistance to disturbance was rewarded.
She will face either fellow American Robin Montgomery or Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the quarter-finals.
Following her second round loss at the Australian Open to world number one Iga Swiatek, Collins announced that this would be her final season in professional tennis.
With the French Open on the horizon, she could have one last chance to win the first ever Grand Slam of her career.
