After vitriol targeting Assassin’s Creed Shadow’s Yasuke, Ubisoft CEO denounces “hateful acts” towards developers
Following vitriolic attacks targeting Assassin’s Creed Shadows in recent weeks, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has denounced the “malicious and personal online attacks” directed against the publisher’s developers.
First, let’s go back Animus-style to catch up. Assassin’s Creed fans have been clamoring for a stealth stabathon set entirely in feudal Japan since the series’ debut, and this year’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows finally does just that. But what should be an undeniably exciting release for AC fans was somewhat spoiled thanks to backlash surrounding one of the game’s dual protagonists, history’s first black samurai, Yasuke.
Some have expressed outrage over what they perceive to be a historic misstep in a video game series featuring mythological creatures and aliens. Others had more distasteful opinions of the game’s co-director, with Elon Musk even tweeting that “DEI is killing art” – DEI referring to diversity, equity and inclusion. Ubisoft executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté responded by saying such comments “fueled hatred.” Today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot also spoke out.
“I am particularly concerned by the personal and malicious online attacks that have been directed at some of our team members and partners,” Guillemot said in an interview on the company’s blog. “I want to make it clear that we at Ubisoft condemn these acts of hate in the strongest possible terms, and I encourage the rest of the industry and gamers to speak out against them as well. I am proud to support the incredible work of our teams and partners, and I will always have faith in their creative choices. We should all celebrate the hard work and talent that goes into creating video games.”
Guillemot isn’t talking about Assassin’s Creed Shadows directly, and perhaps he’s generally referring to the growing online toxicity swirling around the internet, but the implication is certainly there.
Whether you prefer Naoe’s stealthier routes or Yasuke’s heavy weapons, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will allow us to play most of the game with a single character, because it’s not about “forcing someone to go back.”
