9-1-1 Season 7 Ending Explained by Peter Krause

Note: This story contains spoilers from the Season 7 finale of “9-1-1.”

‘9-1-1’ fan favorite Bobby Nash may have survived the tense Season 7 finale, but star Peter Krause teased plenty of drama to come after this big shift in power dynamics at barracks 118.

The episode, titled “All Fall Down”, followed immediately after the devastating fire at Bobby and Athena’s (Angela Bassett) house. After saving Athena from the fire, Bobby collapsed at the end of episode 9. The finale picked him up in the hospital, having suffered a cardiac arrest. After a tortuous investigation by Athena brought the arsonist responsible to justice, Bobby woke up and the couple seemed ready to rebuild their lives from there.

But before the fire, Bobby had submitted his resignation from 118 to the fire chief. So when he attempted to return to his post at the end of the episode, he and the rest of the crew were shocked to learn that former captain Vincent Gerrard (Brian Thompson) was already back – being came out of retirement to put things right. fire station and fill the void left by Bobby.

“Gerrard is mad at Bobby because, of course, he took over the fire station after Gerrard. So I wonder if there’s some sort of conflict and behind-the-scenes shenanigans that Gerrard is planning,” Krause teased to TheWrap of the drama to come when the series returns for Season 8 this fall.

With a long summer break for “9-1-1” fans to get through before the answers arrive, Krause spoke with TheWrap about surviving another life-threatening moment, where he hopes the Bobby’s story will continue and why the series is “stronger”. than ever” after season 7.

TheWrap: Congratulations on finishing Season 7 of “9-1-1.” That episode 9 cliffhanger had us all afraid for Bobby for a second. Was there ever a time when Bobby couldn’t survive that house fire?

Krause: Well, the characters in the show have survived so many horrible, life-threatening accidents, like the characters in the Looney Tunes cartoons – none of whom ever died. In keeping with the language of the show, we are incredibly resilient characters. We go through things and we come back… We want to talk about people’s resilience and, in Bobby’s case, redemption. So, I don’t know if killing off characters is necessarily part of the show’s language – at least not the main characters.

Bobby left the 118 just before the fire and in the chaos he apparently forgot to cancel it, which brings old Captain Gerrard back from the station to wreak havoc and keep us guessing what’s next all the way. summer. What did you think of this cliffhanger?

It was an interesting scene to play. I wasn’t sure why Bobby had just arrived, I had to accept it. But when Bobby showed up after his resignation, I thought maybe he was suffering from a little amnesia. But obviously, after the scene he has with Amir (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), Bobby has a renewed sense of commitment to his place in the world and his job. So he shows up and, of course, that leads to this weird moment.

I resigned, but I didn’t necessarily think the paperwork was over. We can’t say all that in the scene. But now (showrunner Tim Minear) has created this situation where Bobby now has to somehow regain the position of captain of the 118. I don’t know exactly how that’s going to play out in season 8, but I am convinced that Bobby will win.

9-1-1

We saw in flashbacks how the former fire captain led the 118 in the past and how bad morale was at the station at that time. What can you tell us about where the team will go from here in Season 8?

I hope one day Bobby gets back as captain of the 118 as soon as possible and we can get back to our usual action and comedy. I think that’s what’s really fun for viewers, as well as our departures into deeper territory, like we did with Bobby towards the end of this season. It was really interesting to be able to travel from the romantic comedy of the very first episode to the deeply emotional work episodes. This was a wonderful season for the Athena-Bobby relationship, as well as other characters, for Buck and I loved this Chimney-centric episode.

I just think we came back stronger than ever after the strike. These were 10 fantastic episodes.

Bobby also had a lot of internal struggles before his house burned down, and now he has to rebuild his professional and personal lives from scratch in more ways than one. Where do you hope season 8 takes Bobby next?

Gerrard is mad at Bobby because of course he took over the fire station after Gerrard. So I wonder if there isn’t some sort of conflict and shenanigans going on behind the scenes that Gerrard is planning.

But like I said, I want to get back to the action comedy of the show. And I’d also like to see Bobby help some people in the AA world, while still being there for his firehouse family and for Athena, and continuing to be a supportive figure in service to others. I think that’s a lot of what we’re going to see from Bobby going forward.

I would love to work with Malcolm-Jamal Warner again too, we get along wonderfully and I think he’s a wonderful actor. I’d love to do more with him… Maybe there’s some sort of dream sequence where Bobby and Amir can be friends.

One of the strengths of Bobby’s characters is that even though he has cultivated this amazing life for himself and has all these people who love him, he still carries a lot of guilt and pain because of the mistakes from his past. Do you think there’s a point where he’s able to give himself a little more credit or find more peace?

I think Bobby will always be oriented towards good work and (the guilt) will never completely leave him. But I think with the deepening and strengthening of his relationship with Athena and also with his “9-1-1” 118 family, I think that will have power over him in the future.

I think there will be fewer dark clouds hanging over him in the future, which I think will be a good thing.

“9-1-1” will return for season 8 this fall on ABC. Past episodes are available to stream on Hulu.
