“3 Body Problem” will air for 3 seasons on Netflix

3 Body Problem Creators David Benioff, DB Weiss and Alexander Woo on Friday cleared up confusion surrounding the Netflix sci-fi drama’s recent renewal, confirming that it will produce two additional seasons.

During the streamer’s initial presentation last month, the streamer announced that 3 Body Problem was picked up for “all-new episodes,” with Benioff, Weiss and Woo assuring fans that they “will be able to tell this story to its epic conclusion.”

No episode or season numbers have been revealed, sparking wild speculation. Benioff, Weiss and Woo later told THR that the revival was for “seasons,” but didn’t provide details until today when they confirmed there would be seasons 2 and 3 over the course of of a season. 3 Body Problem Television Academy panel at the Netflix FYSEE space.

The number of seasons matches that of the books in Cixin Liu’s trilogy, on which the series is based, and the trio said the format would allow them to tell the story the way they intended.

“We included a lot of what we loved about the (novels) in Season 1, but the vast majority of the reasons we wanted to do this series are in Season 2,” Weiss said during the panel. “We always wanted to get to the last page of the third book, and it’s really exciting for us to be able to do that.”

3 Body Problem tells the story of humanity’s first contact with an extraterrestrial civilization. It follows a young woman whose fateful decision in 1960s China reverberates across space and time to the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably crumble before their eyes, a tight-knit group of brilliant scientists team up with an unwavering detective to confront the greatest threat in human history.

Weiss discussed the challenges a season 2 would pose on Deadline’s Contenders TV last month.

“It kind of immerses you in the world of the story, but the story gets really wild in the best way possible,” he said. “With something this wild, there are a lot of choices to make and a lot to figure out. We have been thinking together to understand them recently, especially in recent months.
