Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky postponed his upcoming international trips on Wednesday as Russian forces wage an offensive in the Kharkiv region in the northeast of the country.
“Volodymyr Zelensky ordered that all international events planned in the coming days be postponed and new dates coordinated. We are grateful to our partners for their understanding,” Sergii Nykyforov, Zelensky’s press secretary, said in a statement on social media.
Earlier this week, Ukraine evacuated thousands of residents from the Kharkiv region as Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s forces advanced, as Zelensky warned that “fierce fighting” was being waged there and villages were transformed into a “combat zone”.
Ukrainian commanders “make all decisions based on complete information.” Additional forces are deployed and reserves are available,” Nykyforov said.
Spain and Portugal were on the list of countries Zelensky was expected to visit, according to media reports.
