Zach Edey at No. 9 ‘is one of the worst picks’ in history

An NBA Draft analyst was left speechless with the No. 9 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Yahoo Sports’ Krysten Peek was the first to voice her thoughts on Purdue star Zach Edey entering the league after the Grizzlies selected him in the first round.

“It’s one of the worst picks I’ve seen in the history of the draft,” Peek said.

Although Edey has been a generational talent during his tenure at Purdue, where he led the Boilermakers to a national championship game appearance this season, some analysts believe he isn’t fit to play the game at the highest level.

Edey, who stands 7-foot-4, is an old-school big man who returns to the basket.

It’s primarily used for post-up touches and tends to clutter the paint, something the NBA has moved away from in the 3-point era.

He lacks an explosive first step as well as real shooting ability.

Peek expressed multiple concerns about how he would play in the pros.

“I have absolutely no idea how he’s going to fit in the backcourt with Ja Morant,” she said. “He only made 8% of his shots in pick-and-roll. And defensively, he is a liability. …Teams are going to chase him in the pick-and-roll.

Peek added that the Grizzlies could have targeted Tristan da Silva or even Cody Williams instead of Edey.

Fans also had similar feelings to Peek, which they shared on social media.

One X user said: “I didn’t realize at 9am this was a possibility. »

Another user also shared their views on the selection:

“I would say Zach Edey in the top 10 is the worst pick in the draft, but Bronny James is probably going to get drafted at some point, so……”

ESPN analyst and former Golden State Warriors manager Bob Myers was also shocked by Edey’s choice.

“It’s the most surprising pick so far, for me…I just didn’t see him going that high…” Myers said before noting that Edey could be a good pick alongside the Sports forward Jaren Jackson Jr.

Time will tell if Edey can adapt to the league and if Peek’s initial reaction was correct.
