YouTube Premium subscribers can expect some new features on their devices, as well as some experimental adventures.
The platform began by detailing a new “skip forward” feature that Premium users can use when browsing videos in a blog post. YouTube says that double-tapping your screen to skip ahead a few seconds will bring up a “skip forward” option. This button is said to take you “where you want to go.”
The skip forward button lets users jump to the most exciting video moments using YouTube’s AI software and viewing behavior. Premium subscribers in the US on Android are already getting it, but iOS users will get it in the coming weeks.
YouTube Shorts are quick streams of content that the platform now allows users to take anywhere with picture-in-picture support. Starting a short film in the app and dragging it to another will collapse the video to the side of your screen. Short films will appear vertically, but in the same vein as if you were watching a normal long-form video.
Users can tap the box outline to view the short film in full screen and return to the YouTube app.
The post adds that picture-in-picture support for Shorts has started arriving for Android users.
Finally, YouTube is teasing some of its current experimental features for Premium users, such as Shorts in Smart Downloads. The app will take into account your Shorts watch history and “automatically” download content it recommends for offline use. After launching its conversational AI test late last year, YouTube has announced its return for Android Premium users.
The tool offers help in the form of videos via the “Ask” button via summaries, information on the topic, etc. Additionally, Premium users can check out the new design changes to the YouTube watch page.
The YouTube team then detailed an update on user feedback and requests, starting with storage issues. The service is investigating device storage issues regarding its download feature. Additionally, Premium subscribers can enjoy 4K content on phones, TVs, tablets and the web. An 8K option is available for TVs, computers and VR headsets.
YouTube highlights its plan to develop easily accessible Premium controls and fixes the loss of videos in the queue. Additionally, the “Continue Watching” feature is about to be fixed to include videos stored in your queue.
Android Police spotted a test that just started that lets users mention others in the comments section of a video. YouTube explained in its experimental notes that test participants can type “@” when commenting. This will produce a list of channels (or handles) that you can mention in your post. Clicking on their name will turn it into a “clickable related mention.”
The ability to tag another person is now available to a limited selection of creators. However, YouTube emphasizes that anyone can interact with the linked nickname when it is published.
