YouTube blocks Hong Kong’s in-waiting leader John Lee’s campaign account

HONG KONG—Google’s YouTube has blocked the campaign account of Hong Kong’s only leadership candidate, citing U.S. sanctions, in a move that is raising tensions between big tech companies and the city’s government amid national security crackdown on political opposition.

John Lee, a former police officer and government security chief, is set to become Hong Kong’s next top official in a small-circle election to be held on May 8 by a committee of around 1,500 loyalists for the mostly in Beijing and tightly orchestrated by the Chinese central government. Mr. Lee first declared his candidacy for Hong Kong’s senior civil service on April 9 in a live stream posted on the two Facebook and YouTube.
