Getting a job in technology is difficult right now – but not out of the question, said Will Kancel, Microsoft Xbox’s main engineer.
“When people say it is impossible to get a job – it’s not impossible,” Kancel said in an interview with “Codesmith”. “You can do different ways to find out how you can get to your career.”
Although the opportunities are less and the fierce competition, Kancel, which obtained a role in Microsoft for the first time in 2021, believes that the strategy required to win a technological job on the current market is relatively similar to what it was looking for one in the past.
“My goal was to get a job, like everyone else,” he said. “It was easier at the time. It’s more difficult now, but these are similar tools and determination.”
The concerns have intensified concerning a career scale with the collapse of young workers as well as job losses for automation. However, Kenél does not believe that AI will soon take the place of software engineers. This tendency is “stray”, he added, and job seekers should avoid allowing him to torpedo their morale.

There is no sure way to guarantee success during research, said Kancel. Instead, it is “a lot of little things that are added”. By approaching hunting from different angles, the researchers improve their overall successful chances, he said.
“It will not be like an excellent project you have carried out, or you have an excellent website for yourself, or a connection you have established,” said Kancel. “It’s a lot of these little things.”
Kancel suggested treating failure as an opportunity to change approaches. If something does not work, it could be time to try a new approach rather than continuing to apply in the same way.

As for the more usable advice on how to stand out on a crowded market, Kancel suggests leaving the computer of the computer and attending relevant local events as often as possible. Expancing research to include jobs in person could also prove beneficial, he said.
“I want to go to real events in person and make roles like that in your pipeline,” he said. “Remote gets so many candidates. In your city, you can really stand out from people there.”
