Yoko Ono puts old New York home on sale for $5.5 million

A two-story building in Soho, purchased by the late John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1971, has hit the market for the first time in half a century.

The brick, bluestone and terra cotta structure at 496 Broome St. was the first residence the two men purchased together in New York, two years before moving to Dakota on the Upper West Side, where Lennon was beaten down.

Now, more than 50 years later, Ono – who has retained control of the property since his purchase – and his son, Sean Ono Lennon, have put it up for sale with the JLL company, for an asking price of $5.5 million, according to the New York Times. reported.

“The Broome St. building was sort of a base for their artistic projects,” Philip Norman, author of “John Lennon: The Life,” told the publication, adding that Lennon and Yoko, now 91 years, were also renting an apartment at 105 Bank Street when they purchased the Broome Street building. “Bank Street was their living room, where people could just walk in.” »

Built in 1885, the building features an open gallery-style main floor with 14.4-foot-high ceilings, an open kitchen, and a rear loft bedroom. On the second floor there is a work space and a recording studio, according to the press.

The exterior of the ground floor is tiled while the upper level has four consecutive windows.

In total, it measures just over 3,800 square feet. Current zoning allows for the construction of three additional floors, for a total of approximately 7,500 square feet.

“496 Broome St. is both a unique piece of New York history and popular culture and an excellent investment opportunity for the right buyer,” said Paul Smadbeck, who holds the listing with colleague by JLL Guthrie Garvin. “The mixed-use zoning and location in one of the city’s most sought-after and forward-thinking neighborhoods provides an exciting opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind property.”
