Kayce Dutton finally speaks out.
Luke Grimes is addressing the drama surrounding his “Yellowstone” co-star Kevin Costner amid continued confusion over whether the vet actor will return for Season 5.
“What happened there is unfortunate if it changed anything in the way the show was going to go,” Grimes, 40, said in a recent interview with The Independent.
The musician added that he knew Costner, 69, had become “busy” with his “passion projects,” which include his upcoming film “Horizon: An American Saga.”
“At some point you gotta do what you gotta do, man,” he added. “You have to do what you love.”
Grimes plays Costner’s son, Kayce Dutton, in the series.
“If I could have found my dream role at the age I got this job, it would have been Kayce,” he told the outlet. However, he refuses to watch himself on screen.
“I’m so scared to look at it and not like what I did,” he added.
The beloved Paramount series is coming to an end, but the cast has yet to film the final episodes of season 5 for part two. Last year, reports emerged that Costner wanted to spend less time filming and creator Taylor Sheridan said he was “disappointed” because it “truncated closure” on Costner’s character, John Dutton.
“I never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out over the phone,” Sheridan told The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023. “But once the lawyers get involved, people can’t talk to each other. . the other and start saying things that aren’t true and try to shift blame based on how the press or public seems to react. He took a lot on the chin and I don’t know if anyone deserves it. His film seems to be a big priority for him and he wants to change direction.
He added: “I sure hope (the film) is worth it – and that it’s good. »
In August of that year – in the midst of Costner’s divorce proceedings from his ex-wife Christine Baumgartner – court documents noted that Costner “refused to answer questions about whether he had been offered the opportunity” to star in a potential sixth season of “Yellowstone” – “or if he had simply chosen to leave.”
According to the brief, Costner earned approximately $11 million for Season 4, or approximately $1.1 million per episode. For season 5, he received $10 million, or $1.25 million per episode.
Costner’s lawyer ultimately denied that the actor was delaying production, which was also delayed due to Hollywood writers’ strikes.
Despite the drama, Costner recently suggested he would return to Dutton Ranch.
“I wish we could do it, but we haven’t,” Costner told Entertainment Tonight at CinemaCon 2024 in Las Vegas earlier this month.
“I thought I was going to do seven (seasons of ‘Yellowstone’) but right now we’re at five. So how does it work – and I hope it does – but they have a lot of different shows going on,” he said. “Maybe it will (work). Maybe it will come back to me.
He concluded: “If that’s the case and I feel really comfortable with it, I would love to do it.”
