San Jose – The return of Yaroslav Askarov to the net for the AHL subsidiary of San Jose Sharks will have to wait a little longer.
Askarov, the best goalkeeper of the Sharks who had not played for six weeks due to a low body injury, had been on the right track to start the San Jose Barracuda match on Tuesday evening against the reign of Ontario. But, according to Barracuda coach John McCarthy, Askarov re-aged the injury in the hours preceding the match and was not available to play.
Askarov was on the ice for pre-match warstlands in Tech Cu Arena, but Gabriel Carriere started in a 3-2 defeat against the reign, marking the fourth consecutive defeat of San Jose.
“Little Reverse,” said McCarthy when he questioned on Askarov after a 3-2 defeat against the reign of Ontario on Wednesday. “They are always somehow diagnosing it and understanding what is going on, but I don’t think it’s going to be long.”
Carriere and the Barracuda were late 2-0 after granting two goals on the first two shots of the reign within the first 32 seconds. Carriere finished with 16 stops, and Luca Cagnoni and Patrick Giles both scored for San Jose in defeat.
It is not known when Askarov could be able to return, but knowing what a big piece it is for the future of the team, the organization of the Sharks will probably proceed to caution. The Barracuda (32-24-5-4) are now tied for fifth place in the AHL Pacific Division’s Division with 73 points and seven games to play, starting with two next road games against the Eagles of Colorado, leader of the division, Friday and Saturday.
The Barracuda remains six points on seventh place Tucson and the seventh point before Bakersfield of eighth place. The seven best teams make the Calder Cup qualifiers. The Barracuda has not played in the playoffs since 2021.
