Yankees’ Nick Burdi hits 15-day IL with hip inflammation

Nick Burdi, who did not allow a run in 6 ¹/₃ innings and struck out eight, was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to Wednesday) with right hip inflammation.

The right-handed reliever felt discomfort on the final pitch of his outing Tuesday, manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees beat the Rays, 5-3.

Boone called the inflammation “pretty minor,” but the Yankees will be careful with Burdi, whose injury history is long: The 31-year-old is one of three known pitchers to return to the majors after two surgeries Tommy John and a procedure for thoracic outlet syndrome.

“The most important thing is (doctors) don’t want him to be compensated, which would result in an arm injury,” said Boone, who anticipated that Burdi would rest only a few days before starting to work again. rebuild.

Clarke Schmidt allowed one run (on a Richie Palacios homer in the sixth) on seven hits with no walks in 5 ¹/₃ innings.

Perhaps as importantly, Schmidt reached 100 pitches (finishing at 102) in an outing for the first time in 71 career major league games.

“I loved every moment of it,” said Schmidt, who maxed out at 99 pitches last season and lowered his 2024 ERA to 3.15. “I love it. I want to be there as long as possible. I know there are facets of my game that I continue to work on. I think last year it was (face) to lefties This year it continues to go further in games.

Dennis Santana, who pitched 1 ²/₃ solid inning, earned his first victory as a Yankee.

With the roster spot vacated by Burdi, the Yankees called up Cody Morris from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The right-hander had thrown at least two innings in every minor league appearance and could be used for an extended period out of the bullpen.

The Yankees on Thursday claimed former top prospect Taylor Trammell from the Dodgers, a 2016 first-round pick with a .627 lifetime OPS in 121 major league games.

It was his talent that attracted the team, Boone said.

“It’s an opportunity to get a talented player,” Boone said of the left-handed outfielder from Georgia. “He’s a guy who has been an important prospect in his career. Hasn’t really translated to the big league level yet.

“But he’s a talented 26-year-old.”

Boone said he could picture Trammell’s pinch running and said he could play any outfield position.

“We’ll see” how the team uses Trammell, Boone said.

By adding Trammell, the Yankees designated infielder Kevin Smith for assignment, which left the team thin on the ground.

Boone said Oswaldo Cabrera — who became the starting third baseman during DJ LeMahieu’s absence — would be the backup shortstop.

Boone is looking forward to Saturday’s festivities when the Yankees say goodbye to longtime radio voice John Sterling.

“I’m a romantic when it comes to baseball on the radio,” Boone said. “I completely understand that John was the voice of a generation for Yankees fans. And that represents a fairly large audience.

Boone wants to see one of Sterling’s slogans added to the soundtrack of victories in the Bronx.

“I would love to see that, ‘Wellhhhh, the Yankees win!’ at the end of all our games now here,” Boone said. “That would be pretty cool, I think.”
