Yankees fans booed Vlad Guerrero Jr. after shushing crowd

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. celebrated a home run against the Yankees on Saturday, and Yankees fans weren’t happy about it.

After each of Guerrero’s home runs, he quiets the crowd while walking around third base, he said.

And even though his home run brought the Blue Jays within six runs in the seventh inning, Guerrero didn’t change his celebration.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. silenced the Yankee Stadium crowd as he rounded third base Saturday. P.A.

“It’s something I do everywhere, no matter the situation,” Guerrero said through an interpreter after the Blue Jays’ 9-8 loss, which was followed by another Yankees victory Sunday during the teams’ three-game series.

Guerrero took his time getting to third before making the move.

Yankees fans responded with a chorus of boos for the Blue Jays slugger, whose 362-foot homer off Luke Weaver made the score 9-3.

“That’s kind of his MO around third all the time,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters Saturday. “I said it before: They don’t boo anyone here in New York.”

The home run was Guerrero’s second of the year, and even though he was hitting just .182 and both of his RBIs came on his two home runs, he said he was starting to feel more like himself .

“Better quality bats, definitely, especially the last three at-bats,” Guerrero told reporters.

With the Blue Jays still trailing the home run, Guerrero’s shot sparked a Toronto rally that almost ended up stealing the game from the Yankees.

Toronto added two more runs in the seventh, on a double by Daniel Vogelbach and a sacrifice fly by Ernie Clement.

Heading into the ninth, the Yankees had a 9-5 lead, but the Jays chipped away at that by scoring three runs.

They had the tying run on first base, but Clay Holmes retired George Springer on three pitches to secure the victory for the Yankees.

Guerrero went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the Blue Jays’ 8-3 loss to the Yankees on Sunday.
