Y.G. Marley and Taking Back Sunday among Day 3 highlighyts – Orange County Register

Notable sets from day three of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Sunday, April 14.

YG Marley

YG Marley, who went by the last name Saint Bob, was a sure bet to insert a few of his great-grandfather’s songs into his mid-afternoon set at Coachella on Sunday.

What you couldn’t predict, however, was that his performance would also lead to some sort of unexpected reunion of the Fugees.

Looking back, it all made sense: YG Marley’s mother is former Fugee Lauryn Hill, his father Rohan Marley, grandson of Bob Marley.

And it was Hill who appeared first midway through the set to sing her own songs such as “Ex-Factor” and “Lost Ones” before sliding into the Fugees’ cover of “Killing Me Softly With His Song.”

During the latter song, Fugee Wycliff Jean was also on stage, and that group’s “Fu-gee-La” followed.

Rapper Busta Rhymes came out next – YG definitely has some clout – to do his own “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and a cover of a Chris Brown song, showing off his fast-paced rap skills for the biggest pleasure of the public.

A handful of Bob Marley classics followed – “One Love” and “Exodus” among them – before the entire collective closed with the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” and “Praise Jah in the” by Hill. Moonlight.”

All praise the Marley Family Resort.

Resume on Sunday

Fans from the early days of the festival often say they would like to see more rock bands on the bill and this year’s lineup has arguably met that demand. Rock fans were treated to the 90s band (No Doubt, Sublime and Blur) and more indie rock bands such as The Last Dinner Party and Narrow Head.

The rockers also had the opportunity to get cozy with alt-pop punk band Taking Back Sunday. The band stormed the Mojave tent with an overflow crowd as they played angsty hits such as “You’re So Last Summer”, “Liar” and “MakeDamnSure” .

Even as Coachella continues to be a melting pot of genres on a global scale, there’s undoubtedly still plenty of room for rockers.
