Passenger traffic at Tijuana International Airport has more than doubled since the opening of the XPRESS pedestrian bridge in Otay Mesa almost a decade ago.
Given this rate, the airport and the binational terminal announced major investments last week to extend their facilities over the next five years.
The CBX plans to invest $ 100 million by 2029 as part of a plan that includes an enlarged arrivals terminal, a land transport center and a hotel, Goytortúa CEO of this year announced on Wednesday at Tianguis of this year.
Goytortúa said they were still developing a calendar for projects, which are in the design and license phase.
“We have experienced two -digit growth each year since the opening of the CBX,” said Carlos Salgado, director of Tijuana International Airport.
Tijuana airport increased from 4.8 million passengers in 2015 to 12.5 million in 2024, and growth seems to continue this year. The CBX, which allows ticket passengers to cross the border between Otay Mesa and Tijuana airport via a closed pedestrian bridge, began to operate in December 2015.
CBX projects 4.7 million passengers by the end of 2025. It is estimated that more than 38% of California residents visit Mexico cross the border of CBX, according to Goytortúa.
Mexico, the United States and Canada will host the FIFA World Cup next year. Los Angeles is expected to host several games, including the opening match of the American national male team. Los Angeles will also host the 2028 summer Olympic Games.
Goytortúa said that events of this magnitude, which promise a large number of visitors in California and Mexico, “is something that encourages us”.
“By identifying the traffic we will have, it certainly pushes us to accelerate certain investments,” he said.
The hotel project is still in the early stages and studies are underway. Goytortúa said he would be built in the property of the terminal.
In the south of the border, officials of Tijuana airport have also unveiled one of their most important investments to date.
Over the next five years, Tijuana airport will spend nearly $ 500 million to increase its installation by 47%, as well as new boarding doors, a new passenger screening area and an extension of the pedestrian bridge.
Construction is expected to start next year, said Salgado, director of Tijuana airport.
Historical investment is more than twice that of the last expansion project, which included a new treatment building for CBX passengers.
Tijuana International Airport is one of the twelve Mexican airports managed by the Grupoortuario Del Pacífico Grupo. He now offers 38 destinations, 35 of which are national and three are international – one in Phoenix and two in Beijing and Shenzhen, in China.
