WWE’s Drew McIntyre invites fans to ‘party’ after WrestleMania title win to banish COVID memories

Drew McIntyre has issued an invitation to British fans to a “big party” to mark what he claims will be his world title victory at WrestleMania.

The Ayr native will meet reigning world heavyweight champion Seth Rollins on Sunday night to fight for the gold medal.

McIntyre is determined to win the first gold medal again to make up for the fact that fans weren’t able to enjoy his previous runs with gold – thanks to the COVID pandemic.

Memories of the global lockdowns brought on by the COVID outbreak, first in 2020, are still fresh for Scots.

While all elite sports were shut down at least for a short time, WWE continued to broadcast its weekly TV shows and monthly Premium Live events – albeit without fans in attendance.

This meant that McIntyre’s incredible victory over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania that year was bittersweet.

After winning the Royal Rumble in January with a thunderous live reaction, only television studio personnel were present to watch his world title win over Lesnar in the spring, with Mania moving to the Performance Center training facility in WWE.

While McIntyre has relieved some wrestling fans of the fear and uncertainty of those times, he now wants to repeat the victory – and this time celebrate.

“I’m seriously going to make up for it,” he told U105 radio, convinced his loss to Rollins was already in the bag.

“I had all these open-top bus plans as the first ever British champion, first ever Scottish champion, to travel around England, Scotland, to get to Ireland and I’ve got a lot of family there .

“(I) wanted to say ‘we did it,’ but unfortunately the world stopped the first time I won it, and the second time the world was still shut down.

” I moved forward. WWE gave the world an escape when every other sports industry shut down.

“We’re very proud of it and I’m proud to have led the charge but, ultimately, I’m going to get my hands on this title at the biggest WrestleMania of all time.

“One for me, because the other two title reigns were for everyone but, at the same time, everyone is welcome to the party when I come home.

“When I travel touring the UK and Belfast, every night will be a big party.”

Rangers superfan McIntyre hopes fans will join him when WWE comes to the UK and Ireland for its post-WrestleMania tour next month.

The company is hosting live events in Birmingham, Cardiff, London and Belfast between April 17 and 20, with Clash at the Castle: Scotland also confirmed for McIntyre’s home country in June.

The live atmosphere of the crowds here is something the deadly grappler can’t wait to taste again.

He added of wrestling fans on these shores: “They’re really, really emotionally involved, they’re willing to jump the barricade and take on somebody next to you because they feel different from you.”

“It’s a football atmosphere… I love it. When our employees are passionate about something, invested in something, they give the best of themselves. »
