Wrexham mocks Stockport fans’ banners as Rob McElhenney delivers emotional acceptance speech after promotion from League Two

Stockport County fans were keen to remind Wrexham of their status as League Two champions when the promotion rivals clashed on Saturday.

Both clubs have been involved in a season-long battle to secure their place in the third tier of English football for next season.

After losing the play-off final in the previous campaign, Stockport went one step further and sealed the title last week.

Wrexham finished second and achieved back-to-back promotions, with the two teams playing each other on the final day of the season.

And traveling supporters from Stockport in Wales were on hand to celebrate their league title at their rival’s home ground.

In an image published on X, the faces of Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were spotted on a homemade banner.

“You only came to see the champions,” it read, with another fan in the background holding an inflatable trophy.

There was also a plane flying over the racecourse with a banner that read: “SCFC CHAMPIONS AGAIN OLE OLE”.

Wrexham won the match 2-1 to avenge their 5-0 defeat earlier in the season, rounding off an excellent campaign overall.

Co-owner McElhenney showed his gratitude to fellow club staff for their efforts throughout a memorable season.

In a video on his Instagram, he gave a heartfelt speech while holding a glass of whiskey to help make a toast.

“Every person here plays and has played a role in this club,” he told the small audience listening to him.

“To go from the National League to Ligue 1 in three years is simply incredible. Everyone here at the club is giving maximum effort, team after team.

“Nick Grad is here, he works at FX (as president) and plays a very important role in the process. So everyone, well done!”

McElhenney and Reynolds have been key cogs in Wrexham’s promotion machine since taking over in 2021.

And with back-to-back promotions now sealed, they can look forward to taking another step up in the football league as they prepare for life in League One next season.
